  • 4WD - turning resistance.

    Hello again,

After doing the starter I am now driving about but today after being in 4WD for a while (snow) when approaching full lock going forwards and reverse it feels like the brakes are on - is this normal? I thought we could use these in 4WD all the time.

Also wet boot after 30 hours of rain, drivers (RHD car) side by the tool cubby box, just under the air vent in the window.

What does it say on the top of the transfer lever?

You shouldn't use 4wd on a 2nd gen unless on slippy surface.

There are far more techinal explanations, but you should not use 4wd on tarmac etc.

Then you have no centre differential which means you can't use 4WD on dry/grippy surfaces.
The resistance you can feel is the transfer box complaining.

Ploddit, even in the snow mine would "lock up" when reversing with nearly full lock... use it only when you need it ie really slippy snow or ice.

Thank you gentleman, that's put my mind and wallet at rest.

My last 4X4 was a Solihull example so I need to learn the foibles of the rising sun.

So the tight wads forgot a center diff - they don't say that in the handbook - shame it felt very sure footed.

Well found the PO had put 3.0 bar/43psi in the rears (standard tyres) alot nicer now

almost sounds as if we're not allowed to use 4WD unless we really really have to!
I wouldnt worry too much, just like the others say, dont ever use it on tarmac and you should be fine..

With General Grabber A/T2 tyres fitted 4WD is hardly ever needed.

                    :
That's one of the reasons it is so sure footed.

Just remember if you are in 4wd, refraid from tight turn manouvers.

Funny the manual says to do something like 10km every couple of months in 4WD. I'm going to hve to go and find some very long stretches of muddyness.

As long as you do it in a straight line it's OK, the problems occur when you go around corners.
