  • Gen 2 3l td auto box

Just posted this in general section as need quick answer.

Just drained the auto box and out came 4.5 litres dexron 2,Haynes manual seems to say 2.5 l is correct,

Anyone know the correct amount please, this is not doing my state of mind any good,Thanks ,Alan

I just did a drain and fill on mine last week, and got about 4L of fluid out from the drain. If you can collect the drained fluid in a container so you can measure the volume, or at least eyeball it, it makes replacing it a lot easier without taking forever or overfilling.

Mine is a 3rd gen, but that shouldn't make a difference in this respect. From reading on 4runner forums, this seems to be the common experience.

Thanks for that Ian,drained into "drainer can" then into old 5l oil can, hence i known its 4.5 litres,I think maybe previous owner overfilled, but will try and sort tomorrow.
Always wonder why the manufacturer puts a filler plug on the side of manuel gearboxs, but not on automatics ???

I'm guessing that because of the torque convertor, tranny cooler, and all the nooks and crannies in the autobox, you need to have the engine running and the tranny warm, cycle slowly through all the gearshifter positions, and then check the fluid level while in park to ensure you are getting a proper reading, whereas the manual gearbox is really not much different from the transfer case and just needs X amount of fluid in it.
