Spare wheel issue?

Hi all, after owning my surf for about 6 months i have noticed that the spare wheel is steel and the others are alloys. My concern is that because of the differing thickness of the wheels, would the studs be an aceptable length for the spare? Knowing my luck i will have a flat tomorrow and find the nuts wont tighten up because they're too long

best to try it out now while its at home, than on the road with a flat???

Probably right, ideal chance to lubricate the under slung carrier mechanism aswell. Was just hoping to stay by the fire, watch tv and have a beer though.
