  • Thermostat

    Hi

I currently have a V6 that the thermostat went faulty and I removed it.

Can anyone tell me if this will do any damage or is it OK to run without?

Currently the Radiator heats up really quickly and so hot it can't be touched.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks

    Graham

When the coolant is cold the thermostat keeps the water in the motor, when the water heats the thermostat opens up enabling the coolant to flow in the radiator.

Without one your car will take longer to reach operating temperature meaning that you may have more engine wear if you are driving fast relatively soon, and your heater will take longer to warm up.

Not only that, but I believe that a thermostat physically becomes a restriction in the coolant system, thus regulating the speed of the flow through the radiator. What this means is that, without one, the coolant flows through your radiator faster, so not giving it time to cool adequately. With one installed, the coolant is "held up" in its flow time and allows more time for cooling. I think it is a myth that the engine will cool better without a thermostat.

It'll create coolant hot and cold spots too, not good especially on the V6!
