  • Speedo not working .Flashing Overdrive light

We have a 1993 imported Hilux Surf. Which we have loved up till now.
Please can you help. We replaced the speedo transducer ;that we bought second hand on ebay, but it is still not working.
We took to a local garage he tried to manually count the flashes to determin faults. But this appears faulty and he was unable to do this as well .
Can any one help either from experience or know of a garage familiar with these imported cars in the lancashire and surrounding areas.
Would replacing the entire speedo unit remedy?.
When the transducer was fitted the overdrive light did not begin too flash untill about ten mins after being fitting but still the high gears did not change and the speedo never started working.
Surely someone will know or have come across this fault before .As we really do love this car .So any help welcome. Thanks

By transducer, do you mean the unit on the side of the gearbox that sends an electronic signal to the speedo? If that's what you replaced (& you know it's working) then you might need to replace the speedo itself. You could take out the clocks first & check all of the connections. I did but it turned out that I needed a new speedo. Got a whole set of clocks from Stormforce - at a very reasonable cost.

this has happened to friends surf and i think its a common problem you have to replace the head up display as there is a fault with it! some one might correct me but i think thats the only way you can fix the problem! just supporting Doc Bs comments!

just a note, you won't get speedo faults on the engine check light, you need to press the O/D button and get the O/D light flashing for gearbox faults.

            o/d light

if ur surf has the obd 1 diagnostics u can short out te1 and e1 for the ecu codes, but if u short out te1 and tt which is the bottom right terminal as u look facing the o/s wing it will give u the gearbox fault codes hope this helps
            ALL THE GEAR!............no idea!

I had this on mine and it's quite a common problem, here in NZ. It's probably the ECU. Remove it form the passenger footwell (kick panel on the left) Take off the covers and look at the circuit board. There will be a group of 4 or 5 capacitors all squeezed together. Check the capacitors as one of these will be leaking. If it has and the circuit board around it has a dark colour, wipe it with some meths and a cotton bud and put it back in. Try it on the road and you should see an improvement. If it is fixed, get another ECU because it won't be long before it happens again. This will cure the O/D and the gearbox holding onto the gears. The speedo will have a similar fault. Remove it and check the circuit at the back. There will be a dirty connection, again, clean it with meths and a cotton bud.
