Is it possible to drop the sump pan and do a piston ring replacement on the 1KZ, or does the engine have to come out.

The only way I can see you being able to get the sump off any Surf ( 2.4 or 3.0 ) in situ is by undoing the engine mounting bolts and lift the engine up as high as possible with an engine lift, so that you can get it past the front diff and front cross member, and then you will have to negotiate the oil pick-up pipe. Also the 2 rearmost sump nuts are a bugger to get at with engine backplate in position. Good luck and post your result either way.
