  • Sticky: Something sticking!

Garage said diff, I reckon brakes. Sometimes, and it is only sometimes, from cold or hot, it takes a blip on the throttle to get the surf moving, whilst othertimes it's really straining at the leash to move. Feels like I'm overcoming a resistance and then FREE its off!
    Anyone else recognise these symptons?

Stray cat wrapped round the propshaft maybe?????

It may be a lip on the leading edge of the brake shoe it might just need a little chamfer or it could be something like the shoe retaining spring cup come adrift and is being thrown about a bit in the drum causing the intermitent resistance but no doubt i could be way off, one of the more knowledgable should be along to correct me....
I'M ALWAYS IN THE SH'T, IT'S ONLY THE DEPTH THAT VARIES!!!!!!!!

Are they leading edge brake shoes??? I have this design on my hand brake for the Monaro, and when it bites it bites full on. Would have thought this was too extreme for a foot brake? Ie the front edge grips first.

Or do you just mean the front edge is biting a bit more than it should???? A normal shoe is static at the front(leading edge) and moves close to the drum at the rear (trailing edge). Are the surfs different?

          Erm.....

          Well.....

I've seen the dipstick (handle) that looked okay!?

Seriously, never thought to check it, thought it was one of those "change once in a blue moon" type things.

Will have a look tomorrow, what am I looking for (detrimentally)?

Have you had the wheels off the ground, check each one for resistance.

A friend had a truck with a duff wheel bearing giving similar symptoms, the pads were biting as the wheel was slightly out of true.

I'd get it up and looked at asap, before you lose a wheel or something more important.

I started my Surf for the first time in 3 Months yesterday (it started first time )

I stuck it in 'D' and it didn't move. a couple of revs and the fluid got round and away it went.

Bushwacker is probably on the right track with yours.

Level wise turn engine on, with your foot on the brake put in in each gear in turn then back into park then with engine still running check level. Do this cold and after going for a run to get the engine up to temp (there is cold and hot level markings on the stick)

Colour wise. It should be cranberry juice colour and bright. It should not be brown and should not smell burnt. If it hasn't been changed in a while I would do it anyway.

Had a look and it was quite clean with plenty in. Not exactly bright cranberry, but not brown either. Was translucent and sort of inbetween the two, think red wine vinegar....

Did a few stop/starts and it seems there is a resistance at the rear. you can see the rear o/s wheel "break free" and a small but audible "clonk". Will lift the back end and spin the wheels to see what gives.

From a hotel balcony in Malta:

Surf rear brakes, just like your Monaro hand brake, have one leading and one trailing shoe. If they didn't, the handbrake wouldn't hold when the car/truck was pointing uphill and, on the Surf, the rear brakes wouldn't work when reversing.

Aha! okay, I need to check wheel bearings and leading edge shoe then from the sound of it.
                      Thx for the info.

Is that your answer to all the emails that end with "sent from my iphone"?

(sent from my 5 year old PC in a dingy office in Belfast, with windows so dirty I can't see the pouring rain trying to break through the constant drizzle)
