      right update time

saturday morning car on ramps, bash plates off, trans oil drained and autobox sump removed.

additional trans oil cooler fitted with all additional piping etc. (placed it low down so it gets maximun airflow between bumper & valance) cleaned out & re-fitted sump.

measured trans oil taken out (it was a bit brown) 4.3 litres so, to account for additional cooler & pipes, put in 4.5 litres - spot on. started her up & got her up to temp, no leaks, checked fluid and spot on against the hot mark

      lunch

removed lower fan shroud before removing full shroud. undid 4 12mm nuts and removed viscious fan from pulley

removed fan (4 10mm nuts) and undid 6 screws holding fan hub together, don't try to undo these without an impcat driver, they are tight!!

not surprising, no oil in hub but cleaned it out with petrol anyway, filled with just under 50ml of 7000cts silicon oil, screwed it back together, re-fitted fan & put back on car, re-fitted shroud and started her up.

Now when cold the fan moves by hand but doesn't whizz round like before, when hot, fan almost locks up completly -

      SORTED

well chuffed with both jobs and thanks to all for the advice. Due out next weekend with the caravan so we'll se if it helps

did you use a new gasket on the tranny sump, I fancy doing the same but dont want to give Toyota zillions for a gasket, I already told the parts bloke he should be wearing a mask when I handed over 34 quid for manifold studs. If its a new one, how much please. H

Nope, used the original as it was in good condition. Must be honest, I never thought of a replacement.

Just take it slow whn removign the sump, I undid all the bolts but didn't remove them and gave the sump a knock with a rubber hammer the break the seal, then took the bolts out & removed the sump.

When I out it back, even tho it looked OK I bedded it to the sump with some non setting silicon mastic & put a thin bead around the tranny block. fitted the sump with 4 bolts did the up hand tight, fitted the rest then tightened them all up - no leaks

Sorry, don't know if milner or roughtrax do new sump gaskets

          hope this helps

            bugger bugger bugger!!!

            more news

took teh caravan down to Somerset, truck going fine after fitting additional trans cooler and sorting the viscious fan.

Got 180 miles done of a 200 mile journey with only slight movement of teh temp gauge when it flies into the red and steam starts coming out of teh expansion bottle.

Pulled onto hard shoulder and let her cool dowm, had a look and nothing left in the bottle so topped it up and she resarted first time and off we went.

1/2 mile later same again - gave up and called out recovery service. Yhey had a look at the roadside and suggested it was either a blocked thermostat or jammed water pump and that it was unlikely to be the rad or head gasket.

Took it to a 4 wheel drive specialist in Weston Super Mare and turns out head had 3 massive cracks in it between cylinders 2 & 3.

Couldn't be skimmed so replacement head fitted (decent price and only took them 3 days from gettting the truck to having it done).

Towed straight home in one go 210 miles and temp gauge now hardly moves from just below half way

expensive but sorted for another 148000 miles

            hey ho

That's a bummer, I reckon it was already gone when your guage went up before you did the cooler/fan etc, mine had zero symptoms of a busted head even when the thermostat stuck, or for six months after replacing it, I think the head gasket is too tough for the job, I'd much rather replace that than find the head f**ked as soon as these overheat, definitely a weakness/design fault with these motors, plastic head on a cast block and steel gasket. Any other problems with this one I'll get the 4.2 cruiser or sell the van/truck and get another Honda. H

I know, a nightmare but it's still the best vehicle I've ever had. HAd a chance yesterday t opick up a 4.6 HSE gas converted P38 range rover.

Took it out and apart fro the glorious engine note, what a shed. Everything inside was either worn out or rattled and this on what's supposed to be a prestige motor.

He didn't want a lot for it and that's because the engine will soon need new liners and the air suspension was also knackered

decided to leave well alone - like you I like the 4.2 VX landcruiser but now I've spend on the surf, I'm keeping it (unless anyones got a good VX and is interested in a straight swap for a 3rd gen with a new head)

I'm hanging with this cos its fixed and I like it too but wouldn't part with the money again for another head, I've only had niggles with this one till the head went but my favourite car for comfort and reliability was my old accord, its a pity Honda don't have a truck this size with the capabilities of this tank I'd defo be buying one.
