You can tow an auto if you remove the rear propshaft.

With regard to towing a non-roadworthy vehicle, this is a very grey area, where getting it wrong will land you a fine of about £1000 and no vehicle.
The safest thing is to get it trailered.
    Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

You can tow an auto, but keep the speed under 40mph and don't do more than 40 miles in one hit.
Transmission in 'N' transfer lever in neutral.

If a car has it's wheels on the ground then unless you are taking it for a pre-booked MOT you cannot drive or tow it on the road if it's untaxed, untested or uninsured (unless you're a chav or a gi**o). If you need to collect it then you'll need to put it on a trailer and get someone with at least a Surf sized vehicle to tow it back for you.

As regards towing automatics, yes you can but only in neutral and for short distances, otherwise disconnect the rear propshaft from the diff or gearbox, then you can tow as a manual vehicle for any distance.

Any vehicle with at least 1 wheel on the road has to be fully road legal. If there is no tax,mot or even insurance then you will break the law and the courts will come down heavy on you.You will be better off hiring a trailer and bringing the truck back
