  • 2.4 sluggishness

Hi to all, just joined the forum.
After owning 2 Hilux pick ups, decided to get a cheap and quite tidy Surf 2.4 LN130, 1991 (but later UK import), for a grand which seemed very reasonable.
Though it is an auto, and I realize you probably won't get brisk acceleration, but at the moment from a standing start we are looking at walking pace, to be honest.
Is this normal? Not really fair to compare with later 2.4 manual pickups, and that would be the only comparison that I could make as I'd never driven a Surf previously. I have changed the filters, but no difference.
    thanks, Phil

change the exhaust first for a less restrictive sports pipe from the turbo back (if funds allow) or from the flexi back its helped on mine also if you do a search through the posts it will also explain how to space out the wastegate acctuator which also helps have a search through the forums alot of tweaking has been done and documented that will help

the first and cheapest option first is to change all filters and oil and see how that goes,Also check the atf levels and colour. If its not a reddish colour then it needs changing and if it smells burnt. If the level is low and colour ok just top it up, then come back and let us know how you get on and we can go from there. If you don't know when the cambelt was done then i would advise having that done aswell

Some of the 2.4s have what I call a lazy gearbox, very slow but smooth power delivery, awful when pulling out of a junction, but brillient when offroading.

        Mine is one.
        Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

i'm going to have to stop presuming that the basics have have been done already! i was always do a service as soon as i take ownership of a new vehicle the service items and fluids are changed/topped up and change the timing belt as i know its been done, then i then have a clean start on my own service history for the vehicle, i've done this with every car/truck i've owned its better to spend a little than leave it to chance and spend enough to buy a small house

              Thanks for responses..sluggishness issues

Thanks for all the advice on this, the wastegate actuator is an interesting one and I'll be looking at that. Though also probably being on the lookout for a 3.0, a guy with one of these on ebay took me out on a test run yesterday and the extra 30bhp makes quite a difference
