Right, speedo was erratic for a while,either not working for the first mile or so or leaping up to 100mph for no good reason, but now it's dead. I have changed the speed sensor on the transfer box, and that didn't help. The O/D off light flashes some of the time. the gear changes are normal, so the ECU must be getting a signal from somewhere. Why it no worky?

If yes, try (or remove and clean) a different magnetic sensor, (the other one on the T/case which is a two wire sensor) it's a kind of speed/back-up sensor for the ECU.

I am assuming I will only get error codes while the O/D off light is flashing, it only does that while I'm moving and then only intermittently.. Could be tricky to get the fault codes..

Had the dash apart today, removed the speedo healer, and still no speedo... Bother... anyone want to swap my spare 2.4 clocks for a set of 3.0 clocks?
Wasn't a complete waste of time - I have finally got remote locking working!!!

One other area to check while you have the clocks out:
Remove the screws that hold the speedo assembly to the housing and lift it out, then inspect the circuit board on the back for any breakages or burnt tracks.
Great news on the central locking, is that the project you had nailed to a board when I came to visit all those years ago?

It is that project, but a different surf, and a different box of tricks.. The one on the board burst into flames! This one came with negative switching, so after all that, it only took half an hour to do

Just had the clocks out (again...) and you were right. A track was burnt out on the back of the speedo itself. Luckily the speedo in the 2.4 unit I had kicking about is the same, so I now have a working speedo again.
