I havent driven the surf since offroading a week ago and this is whats happening. At idle the whole thing wants to edge forward. Gear selection has also got really difficult. I know I've upset something....any thoughts??

Will do 2moro evening Mark but I dont understand how, with a clutch disengaged, the box gets any drive. And now that I say that, I remember that a month ago when I had the surf up off the ground on all 4 corners, having done the timing belt and bodylift, I started her up and noticed one rear wheel spinning. Its true I roasted her offroad last week ... dunno

Gearbox was full of lovely clear gear oil - only changed last year.
On top of the transfer case though theres a wire going into a circular thingy the size of a 2p coin. At the other end the connector has been ripped apart, any ideas what this is for??
Simon, I've bled the clutch putting new fluid right thru the system. Now I'm thinkin that either the spurious clutch I had fitted last year is gone after 5,000 miles and a rough session on a dirtrack, or the 1 year old milners slave has failed - the rubber dust cover on the pushrod has already called it a day.

i'm not familiar with the manual setup, but if the clutch is dragging, then it's unlikely to be a worn clutch, it could be one of the following, pedal height needs adjusting, check and bleed fluid (again), driven plate binding on maindrive gear clutch shaft splines, or warped driven plate.
there should be an adjuster with lock nut at the top of the peadal.
use heavy duty brake fluid, bleeding should be carried out with two people, fit a fexible rubber hose from bleed nipple into jar containing brake fluid, loosen bleed nut have assistant to push pedal to floor, tighten bleed nut, release pedal, loosen bleed nut, push pedal to floor, tighten bleed nut, release pedal etc etc, keep an eye on fluid level as if it goes too low, then start again.,
A warped driven plate can be caused by an overheated clutch, i.e. in a situation where the clutch is being fried, you'll know when this has happened as it stinks.
hopefully it's one of the first two, good luck.
edit: (i've just read the title of this post, and for some reason i was describing pulling forward with the clutch in in gear oops)Simon '91 2.4td ssr-x

quoting myself '...but I dont understand how, with a clutch disengaged, the box gets any drive'
Ive even been confusing myself. To correct myself ... in neutral with my foot off the clutch pedal, the clutch is fully engaged. The gearbox spigot shaft is taking up the drive but until a gear is engaged there should be no further drive along the driveline. So thats where I'm having a problem am I right. Somehow the input shaft is getting torque thru to the output shaft. Thats also whats buggering up my gearselection coz theres interference in the box.

I was going to post earlier , but thought I would have a think about this first . So , with clutch up , in neutal , out of gear , vehicle pulls forward .Sounds like a seizing bearing on the input shaft and intermediate shaft that runs behind input shaft .The nose of intermediate shaft is supported by a bearing in the rear of input shaft .There also could be a dodgy sincro hub , dragging against a gear cluster .
Only thoughts so far
