  • 1kz-te diff oil specs

Hi guys, new to this so bear with me. Not long bought a 1995 3 litre surf. It's a 1kz-te, and I need to know what the oil spec is for the diff's.
Also, having problems engaging the 4 wheel drive, it engages fine when it's cold but after a few miles driving it won't engage and the lights on the dash flash. Any help at all on these points would be great.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Check the sticky from TonyN for oil specs, here...http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=62

From what I've read you're only supposed to engage 4WD when it's necessary (offroad, snow, ice etc.). Running in 4WD on normal roads can damage the transmission.

You may want to perform a full flush of the transmission fluid with a good quality Dexron 3 oil. Plenty of posts on the forum on how to do this. :

        Thanks Lou

        Thanks Lou.
I know you shouldn't engage four wheel drive on hard surfaces, but the problem is it won't engage at all.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

4wd won't engage on the lever or the button.
Have you tried moving forwards and backwards a few feet when trying to engage 4wd.
on the lever the gear selector will need to be in P or N to engage 4wd and on the switch any gear.
Have you checked the Vac pipes to make sure they are ok and not split/leaking as this may cause 4wd not to engage

Yep, tried the forwards and backwards thing.
Like i said, its fine before its warmed up, but after its warm it won't engage.
Do you know where i can find some pictures of the vacuum pipes?
I found some for the second generation, but not a third gen like mine.
            Thanks.

Yep that's the one. Didn't know what the correct name was for it. Much less hassle than the drop down, had one of those a few years ago, though i had alot less isues with that one!!

you going out on strike when at easter i think it is.
I got laid off last year from networkrail due to an accident back in 05 and i now got permenant nerve damage and on pills now for god knows how many years to come now.
I started off as a contractor back in 2000 with trackrail then moved over to Amey Rail in 2002 mainly for the security then 2005 the accident and i've suffered ever since.
I'll have a look on mattf's site for a diagram
http://daemon4x4.org/board/forums.php or take a look through the tech section here as Matt has most stuff on there

Yeah probably go on strike, unless network rail change their plans. Says on the news that it's cos they want us to work weekends, in reality it's cos they want us to work almost permanent nights and nearly every weekend plus no more bonus payments. I started contracting in 2001, then joined network rail in 2004.
Looks like a new career is on the cards!!!

this permenant night c rap and weekend stuff has been going on for a few years but we all know that its down to 1800 redundancies of maintenance staff.Christ there ain't enough manpower now let alone cut it back.
Between Truro and Par depots there are about 25 to be laid off.Its a joke really. Is it some signallers are coming out aswell in support for the maintenance staff
I would stick with it if i was you for as long as possible. You won't get 24k a year otherwise.
