  • front axel mounts - snapped!

    Morning all, this weekend I have been battling. I was reversing up a hill round a tight bend when there was a big clunk, stopped right there and had a look, the frount nearside drive shaft had separated from the inner CV joint and the front axel was twisted... an episode with a tow truck later, (Note: a 3lt surf hanging off the back of a 2wd ford pick up tow truck results in the tow truck front end coming of the ground and me having to sit on the bonnet so the guy could steer!!) I have dismantled it and found that the front axel mount on the chassis has parted company... anyone seen this before? Any one any tips for welding onto the chassis, Mig, Stick, Gas? All comments, useful or humorous appreciated!

    Hi Matt.We need a few details of what truck you have etc.Have you got a solid front axel on your truck.
    We can't really answer the question without knowing vehicle details.
    The drive shaft you could of just cut the inner cv gaitor and pulled the shaft out and carried on driving the truck till you got a replacement shaft

        Mig is probably the most controllable option, the chassis is quite thick, so i'd woun't overly worry about doing, unless it rust that caused it to fail.

        The only similar thing i've seen is some over cranked torsion bars caused a upper wishbone mount to seperate from chassis, but this was also due to age/corrosion more then anythnig else.

        You may need to plate under hte mount first, then reweld the mount on for strength.

            i thought he must of had the ifs but couldn't get my head round the front axel part.

              update

              Thanks for all the replies,
              Details: 1996 KZN130 1kzte engine, Japanese origins, 140000km’s all standard trim and drive train, high rate springs on rear and Monroe gas shocks all round.
              It is an IFS to remove the shafts you have to open the hub unit and remove a bolt and an external circlip this is now what I have done..
              Thanks for advise on welding it looks like there was minor corrosion but principally the weld along one side never took to the chassis… might try and add it to the general Toyota recalls going on at present!!!
              Any one any tips for other maintenance jobs to do whilst all shafts shocks etc are out?
              I have also noticed that the prop shaft seal on the front diff is leaking so might have to keep it on blocks a little while longer!
