I am fairly new to owning a Hilux Surf.
I just imported a 1994 3.0td surf in September (65,xxx km). I would like to know what other surf owners think about putting in a 5W30 or 5W40 oil. The diesel oils available in my city are kind of limited. I can get my hands on a Mobil 1 full synthetic called Turbo Diesel Truck that comes in 5W40. Pricey (8.50$/L), but not too bad considering I am doing the job myself I figure the money I save can go into a better oil.
I live in central British Columbia where it can get down to -40 Celsius frequently from December to March. I know the specs for the surf recommend a 10W30 or 10W40, I am just wondering if the thinner oil will have any leaking problems or otherwise. The Toyota dealer here put in a bulk brand heavy duty10W30 what I am guessing was a mineral oil when I brought it in for inspection and charged 5$L for that stuff. I would like to avoid them as much as possible, but my mechanical knowledge is severely limited. I do know how to change the oil though.
Any opinions suggestions would be appreciated.
