pipe at back of head

hi can anybody tell me what the pipe at the back of the head is it comes from the exhaust manifold to a valve on the oppsite side of the head and when i took it apart it was blanked of at the valve end i have a 1991 ln 130 2.4td hilux/surf import thanks
