    Advice please !!

Still having problems getting the temperature down..........have flushed the system, and changed the thermostat.

Today i have taken out the thermostat as a temporary measure, as I feel it opens a to hot a temp, which the rad and fan struggles to deal with (top of rad gets very hot )

Not sure how this will affect operating temps but will test in the morning.

Next step will be to change the RAD.

I feel that an airscoop on the bonnet would get some more cold air into tha very hot engine bay........anyone know a supplier of such vents?

Also what temp should the stat open at?

    Cheers

when i first had my 2.4, i had the same concerns, 4months later the surf is still veeery hot in the engine bay, but runs sweet, i think the turbo is the main culprit to the heat under the bonnet, the top of the rad is too hot to touch, but it is running fine, flush your rad, the way i did it was to disconnect the pipe from the thermo housing, leave it connected to the rad, clamped a garden hose inside the pipe(used the typical 'yellow' spray hose attachment which fits snugly,) disconnected the bottom hose from the rad, and flushed, didn't appear to be any 'back-pressure' felt during flushing, or any debris, i reconnected the bottom hose and then flushed through the engine and out of the thermo housing. If you still suspect a blocked rad, remove the grill, run the engine till it's warm and feel the rad, is it hot all over with no cool spots. The temp gauge on the surf is infamous for not moving, it stays just below the centre of the gauge, even when the viscous fan 'comes in', which obviously indicates a temp rise, the gauge doesn't flinch.

Thanks for the reply........I could be over-reacting but as i will be towing trailers around the Staffs moorlands, I need to get things sorted.

Anyone else taken out the thermostat?

Inspite of the extreme temps, the electric fan has never come on of its own accord !!

      Oh well

      Cheers

        hi,

I had big cooling probs with mine, seemed to run ok until it got to a hill or high speeds (85mph+) tried all sorts, only cure was to have the rad reconned....... cost a fortune but did the trick. Can now pull trailer + two horses up any hill

        Cheers

Extreme temps, what are you classing as extreme?? I know it gets very hot under the bonnet. My fan has not yet cut in, but thats good cause it means its not running very hot/overheating, one on me car hardly ever cuts in either.
Temp needle always sits at halfway, did before the head went and still does with a new head.

88 degrees seems high for a thermostat..........maybe I will look for a lower temp one.

Extreme temp is that that causes the engine bay/rad to get so hot that the water is gurgling and threatening to split the seams on the rad ( indeed there is a small pinhole on one seam )

Haven taken out the thermostat, and monitored the engine temps in an average driving day around the peak district, is that the rad coped well and the engine bay temps/water temps were much more "normal" compared with the many other 4 X4 and big vehicles I have driven over the last 25 years !!

My conclusion ( but not proven ) is that the thermostat temp is to high before it opens, and more importantly the thermostat body suppresses the flow of coolant around the system, which is why the top of the Rad and top hose/thermostat housing is so hot.

If I can source a lower temp stat I will post the info.

Anyone concur with my theory on the flow rate?

                Cheers

88 degrees is pretty average for a thermostat, some cars its 92 degrees, if yours isnt right with an 88 there is something wrong and sooner or later you will be renewing the head gasket

                    Thanks Ian

I guess the best strategy will be to run without the stat until can organise an overhaul of the radiator, as that must be the problem.

Any probs with running without stat? ( apart from heater )

                    Cheers

ran mine for a month without thermostat it ran ok. but now its getting colder, it will take longer to get up to normal working temp. if frost hits put a pair of tights on, YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!

i bought mine from toyota and it is 88 degrees, and i spoke to carl at milners about this a while ago and they have had some at 82 degrees but he told me 88 is the proper one, the one i took out was 88 as well, this 82 degrees has come from the old forum, i can remember the post saying flush the system and change the thermostat because imports have a different thermostat in to what we use over here, but they havent they are same

All of the surfs that I have had are fitted with the 82c stat , and that's what they had when they came over , Milners and Toyota have supplied 82c stats as well , but I have always changed them anyway .

thats interesting because it makes the toyota service book out to be wrong, i think this should be checked because its getting confusing, ive bought 4 from toyota after giving them the chassis/frame number and its come up with 88 degrees everytime, this cannot be overlooked as the head is one of the main concerns with the 2.4, so we need to know which is the right one because 6 degrees is quite a difference ps. i always think of this from rubi bee when thermostat comes up, termostart remember it!!!!! http://www.arborwood.com/awforums/sh...6&topid=2250#1
