  • 1988 Surf Gearbox oil recomendations and hellos

Hi Im a new Hilux owner and also new to this site (its very useful).

Im going to replace the MT gearbox oil. The gearbox wines in 2nd 3rd and 5th and wanted to see if anyone had some experience in what grade oil to use or any additives that are recomended.

It might save me alot of expenses through trials and errors so any of your valuable knowledge would be much apreciated.

Hi I checked out the forum referred to, it only mentions "Manual Gearbox......3.0L Multipurpose Gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5, SAE 75W-90" For the "3lt UK 4Runner"

I was hoping to find out if anyone had any experience with suitable gbox oils or additives for older model 1988 LN61's.

Im assuming that other gearboxes have whines and that the problem has been dealt with before was hoping to get some more specific info on the gearbox oil that may help?

Ive searched through all the forums and cant find any info so if anyone has any experience on this issue it would be much appreciated.

      Thankyou

Should be the same oil for the 1st gen gearbox. Check here also:

Thanks Matt. Ive done some research. Its a W56 gearbox, apparently its very common for 3rd and 5th to be noisey as the bearings shag out over time in those gears whilst 4th stays perfect because its direct drive 1 : 1 .

          W56 Gearbox info :

3 litre, compacity 75/90 viscosity (toyota recomended). And for any one that wants to know Im going to use a litre of Lucus oil stabiliser in it or 1 part Lucas to 2 parts gearbox oil.

Will post the results after I have done it for anyone that is interested would be nice to reduce the whine !!!

Hi all just some feedback on the results I got with putting 1L Lucas oil stabiliser and 2L 80/90W gear oil into the W56 gearbox.

Whine has softened but is still there and the shifting is not as good.

I guess there is no in the bottle solution to gearbox whine !!!

Anyway the old oil was very black and the magnetic sump plug had about 5mm high metal type much stuck to it so it was well due a service.
