Turning Off 4WD

I have just purchased myself a 97 Surf 3L diesal Turbo had to use the 4WD at the beach at the weekend. Unfortunately i can't now turn it off. Being a Japanese import i don't have a manuel therefore i'm not too sure if i'm just being thick or there is a problem. Cheers
