Auto surf not reversing 2.4

Had a look at a 2.4td surf a friend has just brought to put back on the road its bascially a bit rough and just needs tidying up.

We reversed it out the yard no problem went for a drive up the road then put it in revers to turn round and come back and nothing, it just reved up as if in netural???

Put it back into drive and it all works fine, but just no reverse now.

Having a look round the forums and it seems to be possibly the ATF fluid and adjustment on the gear linkage. Anything else i should be looking at???

update he tried it again this afternoon and it reversed fine. Didnt get my message in time to check the oils and linkage though. Will let you know what he finds tomorrow.
