            clutch slipping

            Hi jjasonie,
Had a similar problem with my manual surf last year, i didnt notice it in first and second but once in the top gears it became apparent. I tried sticking it in first with the handbrake on and it seemed ok. Anyway i let the garage that we use have a look and i ended up putting in the English solid flywheel and clutch kit, "mind you not a cheap option though",still the old girl would pull a house down now. It might be worth checking that the clutch release bearing has free play. You do not mention if you have any problems selecting the gears, ours use to crunch when selecting reverse and at times a little notchey selecting forward gears, this has now gone completely and the gear change is sweet. This is what my expierence was so i hope it helps and welcome, i am new too by the way.

                  clutch slipping

                  Hi jjasonie,
Yes it can be a bit pricey, the parts alone cost me approx £400 plus labour but i did opt for the conversion kit. The dual mass flywheel is usually fitted to the imports but i prefer the English version. I would of done it myself but as i did not have access to a pit and i did not fancy balancing the gearbox between my legs, been there many a time, just done a p100 clutch and that was bad enough. If you are familar with gearbox removal and take your time the 4x4 is not that different, just a few more bits. This site will no doubt have loads of imfo on this. As i did not do this one i am not sure of the angle the engine will rest at once the gearbox mountings are released. It looks like the head will sit against the bulkhead before the fan touches the rad, i always take them of anyway. I would suggest a good read of the manual. You also have to have a clutch aligning tool, ("mind you i have used a dowl and socket before,")I guess it all boils down to how confident you are, access to a suitable workshop,a willing mate, funny how you become Billy no mates at times of crises! and a bit of forward planning. Oh almost forgot a dual mass flywheel on it's own is about £500,Ouch. Just one other point make sure that there is no oil getting into the crankcase as this too will give clutch slip.
                  Hope this helps a bit,
                  Chaz
