  • Towing an auto

Whilst I know you shouldn't tow an automatic, what if the gearbox were in park and the transfer box were in neutral. This way the automatic gearbox would not be turning at all. Would this still be a problem?

Hi take the gearbox out of PARK and put transfer box in neutral and you will be able to tow as far as you want i have done it loads of times.

I have towed an auto without doing any damage in the past, even though I know you shouldn't. I read on another forum that even with the transfer box in neutral it would overheat the ATF. Which seemed a bit strange given that the gearbox wouldn't even be turning. It would be like taking the wheels off and rolling them up the road expecting it to clock up mileage on the speedo.
