  • Rear wheel bearing help

I noticed a bit of diff oil on my N/S rear inner wheel the other day. As I have had this happen before, I quickly deduced it was a rear wheel bearing.
I strip down the rear half shaft tonight to discover that the bearing seemed to have already been previously replaced . I assumed this as the wheel bearing was orange in colour, which was exactly as the ones supplied from Roughtrax to me last year. In addition there were signs of the ABS ring being removed (notches, dints etc.)
I proceeded to strip down the other side to compare the two, and again the same orange bearing.
I checked for play in the bearing and both were exactly the same, about 2mm, side to side.
One thing I did however notice, which I dont recall noticing last time I change a bearing, was that there was considerable lateral movement (in and out) that is that the bearing is able to slide in and out of the drum plate assembly by 2" or so. Again that is the same on both sides.

So my thoughts are this, either the bearing was changed and not the seals or that the bearings have not been pressed in completely, or that the N/S bearing is knackered and I cannot visually verify that.
On a side note, when the bearing went last time, I couldn't visually see the failure either, i.e. no excessive play

BTW - the last bearing replacement was on another truck.

Can someone with first hand experience of RW bearings please steer me in the right direction.
I know that there are many helpful people on here and as many different points of view, so a reply with...sounds like or it may be.... really wont help much, as my next move and potentially more money spent rests on your replies.

    Thanx
    Gordon...

          Hi,
Not sure that the Orange centre means that it is a replacement bearing. I have just stripped mine down and mine has an Orange centre too. These are the original bearings as I have had my Surf forever and have not replaced the bearings before.
Interestingly, the replacement bearing, which came from Roughtrax, has "Germany" stamped on the outer edge where as the original has "Japan"
          Hope this helps!
