  • 2l/3l cylinder head question

ive only bought a 92 hilux ssrx 2l-te, i knew the head could be damaged and when i took it off cracking between all the valves

im just wondering does anyone know for sure does the 3l head just bolt up to the 2l block???

thanks for any advice you may have to offer

The 3L head is the replacement for the earlier flawed 2L head

You need the 2.8 litre 3L head.
Its not the 3.0l head as many get these mixed up so make sure you get the right one

these heads are fairly hard to get in ireland,i must ring a few engine companies here and see if they have the parts or i might just get a complete new head from stevo, just need to contact him really when i have the money.

is there anything you'd recommend that i do when i put the new head on or will i just be as safe as houses (maby not in the current market)
thinking about putting an open core radiator in i was told that these improve the cooling system

        thanks lads for your help

change all belts and water pump cam belt tensioner while your at it as it will save having to strip half the front off another time in order to do them
What part of Ireland are you.If your Northern then you should be able to get a head sent over from here without any trouble as i send parts for surfs over there.
If its SOuthern then yes it will be a bit more expensive to get them sent over.If the company won't send a head to you in southern ireland then i am happy to have it sent here then you pay for it to be sent from me to Southern Ireland

I paid ~£700 plus bit and bobs to do my head only to find out that the 2.4 is very under powered. I'd suggest you buy a 3.0 and break your truck.

              Rob.

It does amaze me why people say that. Under powered compared to what? Slow compared to what? Mine has always coped admirably with anything I've ever thrown at it, (including lugging the Logeygen back up here from down South).

Well Matt I suggest you take your 2.4 down through France, through the Pyrenees and down to the south of Spain and back. Make sure you load it full of camping gear like I did. Then when you are doing a top speed of 35mph up a 5 mile long slow incline over some mountains, with everything except HGV's overtaking you whilst watching your aftermarket gauge go from 95 degrees up to ~108 degrees you may understand where I'm coming from. Forgive me for trying to use my 'sports utility vehicle' to go 'off into the mountains' with but I thought thats what they were for

btw thats with an aftermarket trans cooler and thermostat aswell...

Here's a pic taken from halfway up - I pulled over and let it idle for 10 mins to cool down. We'd come from the little town way down in the distance. Ambient temps of 35 degrees didn't help.

                  Rob.

I understand what you're saying, but still disagree with your conclusion.

Your expectations are simply way too high for the conditions. Crammed up to the hilt with gear and passengers?, in high ambient temperatures, on an incline which could probably put most of our hills to shame and way above sea level where the power levels will obviously be down due to the air being thinner. (I'm hazarding a guess you probably had overdrive on too)? Not even a 3.0L is going to be sprinting in those conditions.

(Now awaiting the put down post from Apache ).

                    Edit: Nice pic btw.

No... me and my 5' missus, a fridge and the camping gear and spare parts /tools... Not exactly crammed. overdrive off and ECT often on to stop it bogging down.

Got overtaken by a fair few prados which have the 3.0 lump I believe ?. Also overtaken by patrols, l200's , landcruisers, ssangyung's, (sp ?) landrovers etc etc.. Came to the conclusion that the 2.4 is underpowered..

                      Rob.

I wasn't particually impressed with it's performance in Devon either tbh.. (or on one of the passes in the lakes which burnt my trans fluid)

It's a fine truck for running about on flat land but as soon as there's a hill it disagrees... Neither me or my wife want's to lose this truck but a 3.0 in inevitable.

No the conditions are way too high for the 2.4 ?

Yours might just be a bit more finnicky than mine then. I honestly can't say as I've ever been unimpressed with the performance of mine. Even now, running with the turbo disabled 95% of the time, I still can't grouch about it's performance.

Day to day driving I never complain about my surf. Loaded and driving up a hill I'll curse it every time

                            Rob.

Just out of interest Matt what would you do in those conditions ? Crawl up at 15mph ? (getting no air rammed through the rad) Bearing in mind the Spanish roads have hardly anywhere to pull over.

What would you deem to be 'acceptable' performance ?

                            Rob.

                              a very interesting debate
i don't think il honestly break my jeep there was a load of new parts put into it before i got it (clutch service and a few other bits) and i know the lad who did the work, body may be a bit shoddy but il soon get that sorted out too and for and money i paid il still be coming out on top.
all my jeep was used for (before me obviously) was towing boats and that was it, of course he probably towed something too big and the head decided enough is enough. its failed the nct (mot equilivant) and all those parts were changed within a week from the paper work i have and that was only around 16 months ago

ps i found a very interesting site could possibly be a sticky lads

www.toyodiy.com for all your part number needs
go to it and give feedback on what you think
