  • Changing Water Pump Advice?

    Hi All,

I have to change the Water Pump cos it's leaking!

Anything that I should also do when I'm in there up to my elbows in grease and flayed knuckles?

On my list so far I have:-

    Rad Cap
    Thermostat
    Water Pump
    Cam Belt
    Cam Belt Tensioner & Spring
    Coolant

Can you think of anything else that I should do when I'm replacing the pump?

    Cheers,

    Gary

Cam belt idler and the crankshaft and camshaft oil seals.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Is the cam belt idler the same as the tensioner?

            Ahhhhh,

            Idler

            Tensioner

Why would I need to change the idler?

Looks like a ###### well made bit of kit, are they prone to "wearing out" then?

It has a bearing, bearings wear out.

If you don't replace the Idler this could happen and has to quite a few. It can destroy the engine.

I don't wish to discourage you from changing all the timing stuff, but just want to say you don't have to touch the timing belt to change the water pump. It's a pretty quick job.

I thought you would have to on a 2.4 as the leaking coolant would corrode the timing belt.etc...??. might be wrong though.... there is a write up on i think its the aussie site but dont have time to look for the link but a quick search will bring it up.... that said on a 3.0 you dont have to touch the timing as its not in the timing enclose which is above and right of the pump when you look at the water pump (changed mine the other week with the usual good directions as usual from you lot)
The sh$t gets deeper ...but still swimming

                        Re

Got it all stripped down today!

Quite enjoyed it, took my time and it went great no dramas!

The water pump was is s h i t e order, the gasket was home made and ill fitting and the bolts were so loose they could be taken out with my fingers!

Thank the heavens I got a leak!

I will take Nevs great advice and do the idler as well, best to do it all at once.

The only thing that troubles me is the crank/cam oil seals.

Have done a good search but I can't find any descriptions on how to do it.

                        Can anyone help?

                        Cheers!

Wasn't it my advice, backed up by Nev?

Hook the old one out with a seal puller or screwdriver. Then gently tap the new one in with either a seal drift or by gently tapping it in with a hammer, working round the seal so it goes in evenly.

No need to use the search function any more.

                            Sorry about that!
It was Nev's that frightened me though!

I tried but there isn't really a lot on it!
