  • no handbrake since off roading at slindon

removed drums and everything seems fine, replaced leaking brake cylinder and bled brakes so pedal now good.

    cleaned rear brakes.

cables are in tact and work, yet i have no handbrake, lever comes all the way out dash when before it only did 8 clicks or so.

    could i have stretched cables?

    any ideas?

The arms on the rear drums are free? If so, just keep applying/releasing, (with your foot off of the brake pedal), the handbrake lever and let them adjust. They should come back into range after a few goes.

arms inside drums move, back trailing shoe moves alot more than the front leading shoe but all seems free.

tried handbrake about 100 times, no joy.

You did adjust the shoes to finish off? There should be minimal movement in any of the shoes if you have adjusted them correctly.

Unless the Surf's differ completely, you should have an adjusting bolt, (or two), on the rear of the drum assembly which you do the main adjustment with and then the auto adjuster would take up any minimal slack left. It's usually a case of rotating the adjuster(s) until the rear drum starts to bind slightly on the shoes, (rotating the wheel by hand to test), and then backing it off a gnat's.

I've not worked on the Surf specifically with regards to the rears, but it should have the same arrangement.
