    Isn't the issue with the wee non return valve on the top of the tank? I think a couple of folk have had issues with it being replaced with the wrong thing or coming adrift from the hoses.

      Ok, so we can probably rule that out then. I've just whipped the fuel filter off to see if there's water in it (did I need to bother?) and diesel just pee'd out through the bottom sensor thingy, so I reckon I can rule that one out to. Looks like all signs are pointing towards alternator. Verdicts?

          Cheers for your help, if there's no other takers on a different possibility I'm off to order a shiny new alternator. I will of course report back once done and let you know how I got on (or how the Surf gets on!).
