  • Newby with gearbox question

    Hi All
    Surf forum newby.
Had 2 hilux pickups in the past (some years ago).
Usually drive my classic Saab 900 Turbo which I have had for 3 years.
Poor girl is in need of tlc so have just bought a Surf on ebay so I can take the Saab off the road for a while.

New Surf is great. Bought on ebay for £1300. Some poor cyclist ran into it and has dented the door/wing but easy repair. Bargain car looks great.
Large split rim alloys, Bullbar and spots, colour black.

May have a problem that I have read something on on the web.
Autobox feels like a manual with slipping clutch. Read various articles ranging from gearbox shot at to needs oil change.
It isn't to bad, engine seems to rev quite high as box goes through gears.
Reaches top gear ok and have had it up to speed on MWay but if I had to pull away in a hurry it wouldn't happen.
    Ideas anyone.

So hear I am registered on yet another car forum. I live in Preston Lancs, Are there any local meets to go to???

    Looking forward to replies

It's a 2 ton car with an old 2.4 d engine! It's never going to pull away quickly

Sounds much the same as mine, never had any probs with it in over 2 years tho'.
You will probably end up changing your driving style without really noticing!

And welcome to the forum by the way!

It has a fluid torque convertor. It *is* effectively a slipping clutch until you get into lock up in top gear. Thats why it feels like a slipping clutch.

As Tintin said, a 2.4 isn't the quickest vehicle around. If fact, watch out for continental shift passing you on the motorway!

hi and welcome to the home of insane surfers.
        what they 2 said.
I saw that truck on ebay and was shocked to see it go for that price.I was looking at getting it cheap and repairing it and selling on again.
Good choice of vehicle but shame about admitting to having a saab....

Cheers for the replies guys. Had a couple of manual Hulux's (Hiluxi?) previousley and although I didn't really expect speed I did think it would be torque'ier. As Tintin say's my driving style is changing and I seem to be getting more out of it with a more relaxed driving style. Usually going for it in the much adored Saab (that I am proud to own).
Bargain buy on ebay though. Poor bidder 5, he whatched it all week to be stiched up in the last 50 seconds. Ah deep satisfaction. Thought he was a trader with a high top bid. Didn't think I would beat him.
Shame about the cyclist helmet print in the door/wing and it has a minor oil drip. Who cares, easy repairs.
Cyclists, they really should think 4X4 when racing along. So inconsiderate
Hope to talk more but suppose I should get on with my job now

If you fancy a Hilux/Saab fest sometime we could have a meet.
Saab goes into storage at the end of nexgt week though.
My hilux has a dent too. Good bus otherwise though.

Yeah, thats what I was doing.
I was looking at spending 5k on a shogun sport.
I just wanted a work bus so I could take the saab off the road for tlc.
Just found myself looking on ebay and thought why spend 5k when I could pick up a cheap surf that would do the job.
Loved both the pickups that I had had previously but the surf gives me the best of all worlds.
Gettng on with the gearbox better as the week has gone on.
Still not sure if its perfoming as it should though. The only other 4x4 auto I have had was a Range Rover (love old rangies) but that was a V8 so powered off ok and went up through the gears quite quickly.
Am I expecting to much from my surf?
Disapointment is the mismanagement of unrealistic expectations.

the 2.4's are under powered a bit compared to the 3.0l's
I had never driven a auto till i got my first surf 5 years ago and now i wouldn't look back
