Servicing Hints for Novice!

Decided to do a few simple things and sorry if all this has been answered before! Vehicle is a 1989 Hi-Lux 4x4 Diesel.

What kind of engine oil do I use and where best to buy
Air filter looks easy to replace :-)
Imagine the oil filter is just a screw on jobbie

All I need is a simple how to guide on the basic but important things to do. If anyone can provide or point me in the right direction to find I would be very happy.

All I need is a simple how to guide on the basic but important things to do. If anyone can provide or point me in the right direction to find I would be very happy.
run engine for a few mins and then drain oil.Leave oil draining while you change filters.Unscrew fuel filter and then fill it with redex or atf before refitting as this will clean through the fuel system straight away.Change oil filter.Put a smear of oil on the new oil filter O ring then do hand tight then about 1/4 turn(or half a grunt).
Once those jobs are done refit sump drain plug and then refill oil.It will take between 6 and 7 litres of oil to fill up.Put in the 6 litres then check levels and top up if needed.
Once everything is done take the truck out for a good hard run with od off to blast the redex/atf through the fuel system.

What type of engine oil should be used for the diesel engine - wasn't sure if it was just normal stuff! and whilst the air and oil filters are obvious I wasn't sure which is the fuel filter - what does that look like? Sorry for being a dummy but I don't want to give £200 to my local garage for doing this The pick-up actually belongs to my son who I'm going to rope in - I'll project manage!! I do all my own servicing on a 40 year Morris 1000 pick-up - not quite the same

Hi.
Use 15w40 semi synthetic oil.
The fuel filter will be bolted to the bulhead on the passenger side above the oil filter.It will have 2 pipes coming from the top housing and a drain plug from the bottom.Its a cylinder shape.

Air filter doesn't appear to be standard. Can anyone tell me what this is and more importantly where I can get one from.

no idea about that filter unles www.roughtrax4x4.com do one like it.
turn the overdrive off and drive the truck like you stole it for a short while to give the fuel system a good blast through

That will be fun ..................... overdrive - didn't know it had it!!! Perhaps it doesn't - it is quite old. If it does where would the switch be?

Remember my vehicle is a Morris Minor Pick-up and that doesn't have overdrive either

if you got an auto then the over-drive switch will be on the auto gear selector.If you got a manual then you won't have it

I noticed you said 'pick-up' at one point..

Is it a Hilux pickup as aposed to the 'suv' style of the Hilux Surf?!


Its not a big problem.. they're almost exactly the same 'cept for a few differences!


But if its a hilux it will be a manual an therefore have no overdrive on the automatic gearbox!

Yup it's a pick-up - old - matt black - 4 wheel drive with very big wheels. Definitely manual so all ok there. Many thanks. I'll make a few phone calls in the morning on that filter - if not available I'll just fit the standard one - should be fine
This is a really nice site - Morris Minor site is good but not got so many silly icons (which I like!)

Got all the bits and will be doing the service tomorrow. I understand this type of filter can be cleaned re-oiled and put back so I don't need the usual type. Have now found the original air filter housing - is there any merit in putting that back or stick with the performance one?

Just talking to Simon and it appears that its blowing out a bit of smoke! Particularly when he tows a large trailer full of wood and struggles to get up to 30 mph going uphill :o

Suppose first thing to do is get the service out of the way to see if that's improved things. If not what's else should be looked at to find out why its being a bit of a slug. Bearing in mind it is 20 years old!
