    Howdy

Well, I just tried my air conditioning and it didn't seem to make much difference to the inlet temperature - it certainly wasn't a 'biting wind' like other cars that I have driven with air con.

Is this something I can look into myself (ie anything obvious, like fans not running etc) or is it a specialist job?

Oh and please don't tell anyone at work - I'm responsible for the air conditioning on Tornado fighter aircraft, and this would be embarrassing!!

Apparently the system was re-gassed in September 2003, but I guess that doesn't rule out if there's a leak.

I'll check the pulleys tonight - see what happens.

There may be a slight almost imperceptible drop in temperature when the air-con is on (difficult to tell) and I am wondering if there is a heat exchanger somewhere with a fan that's not working. Does anyone know how the fan works, if it exists?

Alternatively, any good air-con places in Preston?

            Rob.

The aircon rad is either under the engine at the front with two fans on top or in front of the main radiator with 1 fan on.

Things are obviously getting a bit too plush in fighter aircraft these days if they got aircon in them - what next CD players and leather upholstery.

            Cheers

                Hot or cold

Well, you're right - the air con on jets works both ways - hot and cold.

Afterall it may be +50°C on the ground an -65°C in the air - there's quite a temp range to deal with.

                  Update

                  Hi

Well I took a look at the system that I have and I have the type where there are 2 fans over a heat exchanger under the sump - both fans seem to be operating ok.

I checked in the little spy glass on the condenser unit and couldn't see any evidence of flow. I then checked the compressor unit. When I pressed the a/c button there was no difference in how the unit behaved - there seemed to be one pulley wheel inside another. The central part of the pulley remained stationary at all times.

There was a little plastic connector on top of the compressor unit - I stuck a volt meter across it and there was no voltage regardless of a/c switch position - is there a fuse blown maybe - if so, anyone know where it is?

So is the system FUBAR and needing expert help - or is there something else I can check?

                  Rob

                      Direct Supply

Do we know if it's a 12v compressor? Should I try putting 12v directly to the connector and see what happens?

                        Partial Success

Well - I have achieved partial success - I connected a 12v supply direct to the compressor and it runs. I am not sure if the air was particularly cold because it's chilled down here. But I'll try it again tomorrow in the heat of the day.

I guess the switch controls a relay and has a fuse somewhere - anyone know where these are so I can check them out?

                        Cheers

You also have a switch somewhere in the system that stops the compressor from working if it's low on gas, so be careful that you have not bypassed that.

                            Making sense

Aaah cheers Andy - that makes sense - I may just have a leak in the system. I guess it's time to call in the professionals!

                            Cheers all for the advice

Theyll be going back to basics shortly-pilots will have to cut down on the beer, tea/coffe and biscuits, what with the extra weight on the new harrier replacement [JSF] and all LOL. Just like the yanks...remember Jet Propulsion Labs....working in different measurements....or like the first F16's that decided to fly upside down when it crossed the equator LOL
