Rear Diff clunk

Had my 1993 2.4td Auto Hilux Surf now for a while, and its a developed a nasty knock, as i change from "Drive" to "Reverse" i feel a nasty clunk/knock. Just had my friend sit in the car with his foot on the brake and puting vehicle into "drive" and then "reverse" and then "Drive" i noticed that the prop rotated nearly a 1/4 of a turn in the diff, with the wheels been locked. I persume this is not usual? if not any ideas what might need replacing in the diff. The vehicle has just hit the 265000km mark now aswell. cheers tom!

Checked UJ's, only very slight play on rear one, not even 1mm of movement, can the diff gear wear out?
