They're probably held on by the shoes, give the drum a tap all the way around at the same time turn the drum backwards to loosen them off.

Dont hate me for this, but I,ll assume the handrake is off. Then as the man says some gentle taps around the drum with a hammer. If harder taps are needed a bit of wood between the hammer head and the drum ought to do it.

yes, handbrake is off, wheel turns easy by hand. Surely there's a screw or somat as they just dont feel like they'll simply pull off the studs. H

If the drum has worn and developed a lip which will catch on the shoes, then you will need to back off the shoes, via the adjuster, through the rear of backing plate.

Will this be the same for a 3rd gen surf also. I have also done the front pads but was not happy about the rear shoes as i also could not see how the drums were secured , if at all. Was going to get a garage to do it for me but if they just need a bit of gentle persuasion then i may have a go myself.

their is also two m8 holes that you can put bolts in to help get a bit of leverage to get the drum off. worked for me.
it never rain it pours! glad I got the 4X4

A hole drilled in the face of the drum which accepts an 8mm bolt..
