  • A bit of help please

Im trying to change a rear wheel bearing.
Ive just managed to remove the retaining ring from behind the back plate of the brake assembly, but I still cant manage to remove the shaft.
does the mounting plate at the rear, with the 4 bolts through it need to be removed??????????/
Im going back outside but will be back to check replies in a few minutes.

    thanx

    OK
Ive removed the 4 bolts and mounting plate, but the shaft comes out the back and it obviously wont pass through with the flange on the front of it. the flange that has the 6 wheel studs on it. How do you remove it? im assuming it unscrews, is it reverse thread??

that retaining collar needs to be released from shaft to let shaft press out of bearing.

It would be worth getting a good bit of heat in there to help release, make sure you don't cook the brake components, you could take the wheel cylinder off to prevent seals being burned.

It might be worth waiting to get access to a garage to press them out and put new bearing back in, less chance of damage that way.

Looking at the oz site and seeing them using lots of heat and a press to get the retaining collar off I would suggest this is the route to go, not big hammers, it can only do harm.
Just be careful putting reassembled shaft back into axle, don't damage the new oil seal.

pic 8 as you scroll down here shows the retaining collar you need to remove, if you have a new collar with bearing kit you could use the chisel method to remove the old one, just dont damage the shaft.

they are using heat to refit the collar as well, as it cools it will secure itself onto the shaft, pressing it on will work as well, but I think you will struggle with 'driveway' tools mate.

one more thing, make sure the garage don't damage you backing plate ie: bend it too much.

Drifting the new bearing back in should be pretty straightforward, just make sure you drift on the outer edge so you don't pinch or damage it.

Have you fitted new seals into axle yet? don'tnip them when you refit halfshaft.

cut the retaining collar off with an angle grinder, refit the new one with a scaffold pole

I agree with the grinder and chisel to remove...with care!
but the refit take care with the scaffold pole as you can damage the new bearing if not carefull - I fabed up a crude 'washer to ensure the load went on the inner of the bearing, with regard to the locking ring, heat it to red hot and it just drops on!

Ive got the retaining ring off with a grinder this morning, no problems.
Its just I cant get the shaft out of the bearing now and away from the brake assembly.

just searched the shady tree method........................ ..
think ill take it to a garage tomorrow............

sorry should have said, I had to use the grinder/chisel/centre punch to destroy the bearing off - as its hard watch out for flying bits of bearing casing, I used a slitting blade suitable for stainless
