Hi fellow Surf owners. I currently have a 4 spider 4.55 open diff for the rear diff of my 1991 Hilux Surf. I'm planning on putting a 4.55 LSD in the car, but I need to know what I must replace in order to do so. Can I just buy an LSD diff head and use that? Will the housing be usable? Can I reuse the pinion?

    Hi,

    A fellow kiwi, i see.

Its pretty simple, you need a complete diff head, 4.55 lsd one that is, it pays to shop around i can get them in nelson for about $900 fully reconed, pays to put a good one in, u maybe able to find a second hand one for less, but they are still pretty expensive. And u dont know the history.
Finding a 4.55 is important too otherwise it will stuff your other diff, will cause diff windup.
Installing them is a piece of #### takes a couple hours.Simply unbolt universal than undo all the little nuts that hold the diff in, pull your axles four more bolts on each side behind brake shrouds, pull the axles out 4-5 inches, brake lines should just be long enough, pull the diff out, put in your new lsd, then push axles back in wiggle them around a bit replace everything else. Done! let me know if you need a hand, have done a few know.

Your housing should be fine, you can clean it out a bit once u get the old diff out. oh yeah pays to let the oil out first too, bottom bung
Also give the diff breather a clean up too, little thingy on top of the housing, also you may need a gasket too, or just use some silicon, when you bolt it back up.
The pinion is part of the diff head, so most reconed ones, the bearings and pinion have been replaced.

I'm a mechanic for Audi, so no problem with the fitting etc, thats easy. what I was wondering is whether I can unbolt the crown wheel from my origional diff and fix them to an LSD hub unit: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=219358452

          Hi, doiff

Yup will work, unbolt the crown wheel, and install the lsd, should work fine. $275 is pretty expensive, no warranty, why not flick your open off should get $200 on trademe and get a compete lsd diff, already set up. 4.55 is pretty common.

I would like to get the complete overhauled unit if possible, but I'm finding it hard to find them. I have the money, so will sell the open diff after because I don't want it off the road. Do you know where I can find a 4.55 LSD complete for a decent price? Say.. $350?

Rung a couple of mates, one had a 2nd hand 4.3 lsd, which needed doing up, so no use, i would keep an eye on trademe, try these guys too they are in nelson, you might be able to figure something, imm pretty sure they will have one.
