MOT fail on 'nearside idler steering box

Hi all,



just had an MOT fail on

Nearside (Idler) Steering Box has relative movement between sector shaft and the drop arm, 2.2.B.1b

hence my question:

what do I need to fix the Fu*ker? where do i get it from, and how much will it cost, and can I get the fairies to do it for me for free?

also failed on lack of rear exhaust, which is ok coz im gonna power-flow it anyway. A bit annoyed since last year a different tester passed it, and said the missing exhaust was OK as he could still get his probe in (ooh er missus). This bloke couldnt be arsed to. Its not like its a pain to get under, its got a 2" lift on newish 31's......

You can get the bushes for the idler from Roughtrax or Milners and rebuild it yourself for less than a tenner or you could buy a new idler arm for anywhere between £50 and £100 depending on if its a pattern one or genuine. I bought a genuine one from Iezura for about £60 I think.

Thanks, ive gone for bushes AND new arm, as the mechanic said he 'couldnt adjust it mate' - but then, they all say that, dont they? if they dont want to do the job anyhow!
will see what happens.
might gradually re-build all the steering over the summer.

Hey Andy, Roughtrax do the idler with a grease nipple n while yours is off the Truck refurb it n put a grease nipple in also ... Hey presto ya got a spare !!!!

so, is it an easy job to remove or do i need specialist kit?

The rate i'm going on 'kit' im only EVER buying surfs from now on, coz I'll have got everything I need for them by teh end of the year!!!!

You will need a ball joint splitter and a 17mm spanner and a 17mm socket. Did mine last week took about 15 minutes. piece of cake. It's even easier if you already have a spare idler in the shed..

I didn't have a ball jouint splitter, (used a Small club hammer behind the joint/s n a good 3lb hammer, a couple of good blows on the front ...
Everything else as Chillit said ...
Tip : Crack n just loosen (3) Idler bolts, undoo steering rod end nut (don't remove yet, "Saves damaging the thread") place club hammer behind rod end n a couple of swift blows should do it.
Refit is reverse of removal (without the hammers)
Took me about a 45 mins, jobs a good en !!

Nearside Steering idler bushes

If you're replacing top and bottom idler bushes:-

1-remove plate which supports the rubber splash guard,
2-remove 3 long bolts from idler housing,
3-prise off domed cap at the top,
4-remove nut and large washer,
5-slide housing off swivel bar,
6-prise top n bottom bushes from housing.

CLEAN everything, regrease, pop new bushes in and reassemble.

2 Bushes from Listers £9. If you want new bottom seal £8.50.

There's two sizes. I don't know where you get that part number because it's wrong. The seal number is correct.
