  • 4WD will not engage

    Hi All,

    Any ideas on this one?

If I try to select 4WD (H4), nothing happens - no click from the relay and no indication on the dashboard. Pushing the lever into L4 has the same effect, but will still select the lower ratios.

Was working fine last week and I tested it every month minimum. Went to do some real off road stuff here in Slovakia today and had to roll backwards and turn back :-(

Would very much appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. :-)

    Regards,
    Andrew

try moving forwards and backwards while the 4wd switch/lever is engaged as this helps to engage 4wd properly.Mine gets a bit sticky at times and have to do this aswell

      Hi Richard,

Thanks for the suggestion. It does not appear to be a mechanical engagement issue - the electrical function has become inactive. No light, no relay/solenoid clicks - in fact nothing at all (as if the electrical connection has been lost).

Does anybody know if there is a fuse for the 4WD engagement? The fuse box under the bonnet (OSF inner wing) has only a few fuses and relays within, but nothing for 4WD etc.

Is there a separate inline fuse for this system at all?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      Regards,
      Andrew

there is a 4wd relay box behind the lower centre section of the dash.If you want another i have several here i can send one out if needed
also have you checked all the vacuum pipes to make sure they are all connected or no splits in them

              Hi All,

Sorry, I don't know whether it is 2nd or 3rd. My model is a 1994/1995 3.0 SSR-X 3.0 TD Auto with drop down tailgate (like the Hilux truck).

I purchased it six months ago and have done over 7,000 miles since - including 2 round trips from UK to Slovakia. It has only done moderate off-road work since I have had it. Car has been 100% reliable since I purchased it - this is the first 'problem' I have encountered.

I'm off to check for fuses (now I know the other fuse locations).

Thanks for your offer of help Stormforce (re: 4WD relay).

              Regards,
              Andrew

                  4WD Now Working

                  Hi,

Finally got the 4WD engagement mechanism working thanks to Paul Kearse down in Stevenage. It was an electrical issue, had to rewire from the 4WD ECU under the stereo back to the activation switch on the Hi-Lo selector lever.

Paul is well worth a call if you need a hand with your Surf and excellent value too.
