  • Rear Spoiler, does it do anything.....

...to help keep the back window clean in bad weather, or is it really just a pose item? We're talking 2nd gen here and I quite fancy one but want to know if I can justify it on practical grounds. And if anyone's got a dark green one going cheap...

Does nothing to the rear window and for most Surfs it's a pose attatchment, but in my case, it keeps the rear of my truck pressed to the road when travelling at 150+mph.

Mine has a brake light in it, for safety probably.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Im going to disagree here. On my 2nd gen without spoiler, I was continually clearing the rear window when driving in the wet. Fitting a spoiler made a big difference. Dont know if thats because my "Sancho" special fake carbon fibre spoiler was better than the real thing or if the real one is just as effective.
I think however that our Vince just used this post for a gratuitous boast

Agree with the above, since fitting a spoiler I dont have to put the rear wiper on as much as i did without the spoiler.
Without it it seems to suck everybit of dirt and rain on to the rear window, rear spoiler certainly helps to reduce that.
And as said it defffo aint as twitchy at ***+mph on the rear end

i totally agree, the benefit downforce is worth every penny!

aerodynamics also helps to save fuel consumption.

so actually saves money ands as a safety device!

Im affraid i have to disagree, a surf has the same aerodynamics as an american fridge freezer, as for downforce we never get up to a speed where it would be of any benefit, apart from certain people.

OK, you've (well, most of you) convinced me that they're a good thing. The next question is how much do they go for, typically, and I assume there are no existing fixing points for them so I guess you just stick them on wherever. I've had the odd look through parts for sale and never seem to see them, is this a reflection of their popularity?

second hand are cheap, try stormforce, i got mine from him and i'd recommend him for spare parts.

there are points to drill through the roof, if you line up the spoiler and look inside behind the trim panels you will see.

just some careful measuring and a good drill and youll be fine.

Once you remove the inner plastic headliner you will see the holes through the main frame where you need to drill through, so there is some guidance to the correct position.

Drive like an Italian then you wont care if your rear window is clean or not as what is behind is not your concern

I'd agree with that opinion. If they hit, they were too close or not paying attention.

My spoiler seems to have been designed so I smack my head on it everytime I go in the boot.
