  • Reverse gear issues + truck moving in 'neutral'

Truck will not move in reverse gear. Allows selection of reverse, engine revs will increase but truck will not move. Surf is 'creeping' forward in Neutral and gears seem to be a bit off. Have checked with transfer lever in 2W and 4W. Topped up ATF (wasnt all that low). Any advice or thoughts?.

Mine did that for a while. ATF had run a bit low and even when topped up was still playing up.

Cured mine by severe off road abuse.

Seriously try reversing up a really steep muddy hill. I was spinning up all 4 wheels off road in reverse uphill, after which it seems fine, still not sure why though

The gear shift linkage could have come loose. The rod that connects the shift lever to the transmission is adjustable, check there first. (12mm spanner)

            same problem!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have encountered the same problem today. Just wondering if adjusting the linkage did the trick in the long run or did it turn out to be something else in the end?

            Cheers

Firstly, I'm sorry I can't help you on this one. However, I sympathise with you, in that it is quite frustrating when someone just says something like, "All fixed now" without acknowledging whether someone else's advice was helpful, nor what the actual problem was and how it was overcome. It is great to share these things!

                Hi Simon

Tried to reply to your email, but failed to deliver.

Not sure what cured mine in the end but did all of the following

Adjusted linkages so lever lined up with the marks inside on lever

Changed atf and ensured levels were checked after short drive making sure
                reverse was used few times

Found really steep hill offroad and reversed up it to the point where couldn't move anymore due to wheelspin (2WD), then drove up it to same point

Not sure whether it was tired atf or air lock but something worked, prob
will never find our what though

Hope this is of some use

adjust the gear linkage bar under truck drivers side and/or the gear lever itself, remove centre consul and there are 3 screws holding down the black gear lever surround, if this is loose and has moved the gear stick will be in wrong position and also cause this problem.

                    Thanks

Thanks guys. I have tightened the bolt on the linkage and I'm planning on changing the ATF oil, but so far so good.

mine had stood for about a month while i sorted out the water pump when i started it put it in reverse foot on gas revs went up no movment thought i had put it in neutral so selected reverse again from parked and the same.
so i selected drive and went forward a touch then selected reverse and all was good no worries, figured it was fluid in the box as it has been stood for a while....dose this bare any significance on the issue
