  • front driveshafts

hi i have a clattering from front end everytime i drive over rough ground or over repairs on road surface, seems to be coming from front end and on both sides.
i have just had new inner and outer bearings fitted, but there seems to be a bit of play in the shafts,i am able to twist them back and forth from behind the inner gaiter is it nornal?
should there be any play in the joint???
or have they been fitted wrong?
    cheers

don't think so mate, it's just a fairly mechanical question that a lot of us won't know the answer to, + the forums been pretty quiet the last couple of days.

Knocking can be one of 4 things:
                1) Wheel bearing preload
                2) Bronze bushes worn
                3) Anti roll bar bushes
                4) Steering idler arm worn

As you say is does it on both sides and you have had your bearings changed and the anti roll bar bushes I guess its probably the idler. Get hold of the N/S wheel and turn it, the arm should rotate without play in the housing.

Check you wheel bearing arent loose too, jack it up and rock the wheel top to bottom. there shouldnt be any noticeable play.

Bronze bushes are my first choice, but...

Check the top and bottom shock mount bolts. Mine have come loos more than once. Plain nuts, no lock washer on he bottom bolt.

Which reminds me, anyone know what thread the lower bolts are so I can buy some nylocs?

Bushes are in the steering knuckle. An inner and outer for the drive shafts.

i held the driveshaft behind the outer cv joint and i am able to move it up and down,
i think this would mean that the bronze bushes are at a end...
is there a way of making them good without replaceing them?
