  • Removing refrigerant from aircon

I'm going to take my aircon right out of my 1996 Surf, but I obviously need to remove the refrigerant first.

As it is a post R12 model, do I still need to get the refrigerant professionally removed, or can I just let it vent overnight?

I've been quoted £25 to have this done, and and more than happy to pay this if it is a requirement - is this a reasonable price?

    Thanks for any answers.

Is it a 3rd gen? If so what do you plan to gain by removing it? The only reason i know of for removing it is to gain a small amount of ground clearance on the 2nd gens which have an underslung aircon rad, on the 3rd gens is the aircon rad not infront of the standard rad, so out of harms way anyway? The underslung rads were a poor design consideration IMO, they were vulnerable to being severely caked in mud, or damaged off road to the point that they become almost useless after just a few ventures into the mud.

I would keep the aircon intact unless you have a specific purpose to removing it?

      Yep, 1996 3rd gen.

      I'm taking it out because

1)I never use aircon in any car as it gives me a headache and sinus probs.

      2) Less work for the engine = better mpg

      3) less weight = ditto, however small

      4) Fitting additional electric fan on main rad. with thermostatic control and manual override.

So.. now I've answered your questions, can you answer mine? I just wanted a simple answer.

When I removed the aircon on my 2nd gen I accidently (ahem!) undid a union and let the gas escape. If you have a similar accident there are two things to consider, the gas is under pressure so keep your face out of the way and the gas is loaded with oil so have some rags ready to mop it up.

sorry mate are you saying you have R12 gas in your aircon? I have R134a in mine got it recharged last week they suck all the old crap and oil out, re lube it and refill it all for 49.99.

            Hi guys

Thanks for the answers so far.

I am pretty sure I must have R134, as I am under the impression R12 was withdrawn in the early 90's (???)

So I've got the later safer(?) gas.

I just wanted to know if prior to ripping my aircon out, I can just let the gas vent without damaging the planet, or should I pay to have it removed.

Gamedawn's solution seems the easiest so far!

I think it`s a good idea removing the air-con. Incidentally, I think it`s just 2.4 lt. 2nd gens which have an underslung rad. as mine was mounted in front. Removing the system ditches a fair bit of weight and allows better access to alternator, engine and main rad. The stock air-con fan is pretty good and mine is sat on the bench awaiting re-fitment as an aux. with a dash-switch.
As for the gas question- the older types are more hazardous but I think they all need proper disposal.
                  cheers,
                  chris

                    Answer.
ALL refrigerants are damaging to the planet some more than others.
It is illegal to knowingly vent or permit to vent ANY refrigerant to the atmosphere.
Make up your own mind how you wish to proceed.

                      Lol

OK, I have found someone who will drain my system for £25 - seems reasonable.

                      Thanks for your help all.
