Will I damage the balljoints getting them off? I have a long handled splitter and a bit of patience.

Why are you splitting them? Just undo the top four bolts, grind out the back of the wishbone where the spacer is going to go (most dont fit as they are) and then pop the spacer in and the longer bolts go back where the old ones were.
Its technically easy but can be fiddly.Cutting steps in the roof of the world -
