What are the aerial thingies on the rear corners?

A friend of mine recently bought a 3 litre diesel Surf on an L plate, ssrx.
It has what looks like two short aerials on each side of the roof at the rear which are almost horizontal.

I thought someone had added them for a mobile phone at first, as my 2.4 doesn't have them. However on my way home from work last night, I was sat behind another Surf which also had them.

What are they and what are they for?

i beleive they are tv aerials, but not sure

sledge is right they were for a on board t.v and i have got 1 left on my truck as the other was lost off roading

Looks like someone nicked his TV then.

The tv system might well have been removed before it was exported, as it won't work outside Japan.
