  • Gear Box / V8 question.

Good day folks, hopefully some can help me out here. I've got a chance of grabbing a rover V8 engine with a converstion for a mark 1 hilux, namely bellhousing and gear box.
    The questions therefore are:

Can a Mark 1 gear box be fitted to a Surf LN130 transfer box?
    and / or
Would a LN130 surf gear box fit to the bellhouse of a mark 1 hilux?

Oh, and if anyone has any advice please feel free, though the wife has just about covered the reasons not to bother so.......

Rover V8 to a strong Toyota Auto would be good but don't know if surf box strong enough or the bellhousing setup/ manufacturer.

Mk1 to Mk3 hilux manual box's not considered strong enough. Mk3 just acceptable for a couple of years max if you are careful.

I have destroyed 2 Mk3 boxes until I used a Mk4 R151F Series which is stongest so far and often used in OZ with various Holden, Ford, Chevy V8 to Hilux conversions.

Try Marks 4wd and Dellow Automotive - both Australia Companies if you really want to do it.
Smack it with a 16lb Hammer and it will come off!

Like above post, there is no convertion in the UK to run Surf manual or auto box with a Rover V8. also a Surf T/case won't fit a mk2/3 pickup gearbox either, so you'll need a pickup t/case as well.

To be honest I wonder if its worth bothering with the earlier 5 speeds, I destroyed 3 in one summer in my pickup, till I fitted a BW auto to a toy t/case.

The 4 speed MK1 gearboxes are stronger, but harder to find.

Oz companys can help but shipping is expensive.

          "...and Lexus quad cam V8s"

          SWEET

R151F gives slightly lower ratios too in lower gears................maybe bit more notchy in the gearchange though.

Shame the Mk2 & Mk3 G' Series boxes were really smooth and great for street drag racing, just not strong enough. The top gear was a weak overdrive and the input shaft bearings could be toasted under torque.
