I finally got round to servicing the Surf.

Realised it had done 5K miles since I got it ..... (had an oil change and filters then and cambelt)

Got the filters and belts from milners (it needed AC belt and alternator belts)

I am putting my experiences here to help others (hopefully)

Oil and filter change were very simple no problems there at all. (part synthetic 10 40 oil from Halfords)

Fuel filter was a bugger to get off, ended up driving a screwdriver through it to undo it. Even after the initial half turn it was as stiff as a stiff thing and took all my strength to turn it (whilst kneeling on the engine).

The new one was difficult to turn on the way back on as well.

The bolts to loosen the alternator belts are very fiddly to get to and turn (ended up taking the sump guard off for access) I used a flexible drive on a drill in the end to crank the bolt down, otherwise I would have been there all day turning it a quarter turn at a time.

The alternator needed a considerable whack with a hammer (with length of wood in between) to move it.

Two belts went on fine and no problems tightening them.

AC belt appeared to be too short to go on (I remember reading on here that Milners often supplied the wrong AC belt for the 3L Surf, and I double checked when ordering and they assured me that it was the right one)

After a lot of umming and ahhing (there was no way this belt was going on)I removed the tensioning pulley all together and the belt then went on fine and the pulley went back on fine (If you do this be prepared for bits to fall off the pulley and note where the go, it's vital that they go back in the right place, if you put the separator in the wrong place you clamp the pulley to the head and it won't turn)

    And there you go.

It's been some years since I did any work on a car (had a company car for years) and I'd forgotten the sense of satisfaction that it brings.

I hope the Mrs appreciates it as it's her car
