What to look for?

I've been looking at buying a diesel surf, i've had toyota pickups and a 4runner in the past. what transfer cases were put behind the 2.4-TD trucks 4cyl, 6cyl..? how do the automatic gearboxes hold up with larger tires tough trails and a heavy foot? Did manual transmission models come with comforts such as A/C? What manual transmission did they have r150 ect..? any input would really help me out
