  • Rear diff seals?

Just been under my truck adjusting the back brakes (why do the self adjusters UN-adjust?), and noticed a fresh puddle of oil. It appears to be coming from the front end of the rear diff, just behind where the UJ is. I presume there is some form of seal there that has worn out. Is that the likely cause, what is the seal called, where do I get a replacement, and how easy a job is it to do (is there a write up anywhere?)? Is it likely that a bearing has gone too?

I've had a look on Milners and Roughtrax, and there are all sorts of seals with interesting names that seem to be associated with the rear diff. Which one is it???

The diff gear preload (and pinion nut tightness) is set by a crush sleeve, severly loading the rear axle (say giving it a foot full of beans, and the wheels spinning and then gripping sharply) can over crush the sleeve, shortening it a little, therefore the pinion nut becomes loose and it'll leak oil. Its very common in an abused truck

Try tightening the nut up (you have to remove the prop) you can change the seal while you in there, but don't often need to.

Stricktly speaking, its buggered up the preload, and the diff needs rebuilding, but normally retorquing the nut is good enough.

If the nuts is still tight, its probably just the seal.

Cant be certain but looks to match what you were saying about near the prop and looks like the one from the EPC (model # 41201C -Seal,Oil (For Rear Diff Carrier)

Cheers guys, I'll check the nut out when I get a chance. You don't happen to know what the torque setting should be do you Tony?
