  • front diff noise

hi all, i'm a newbie to the site but i have searched around here & else where for answers. i have a strange 'ringing noise' coming from, i think the front diff, for a while this noise was only there in 4wd but now it seems to be happening all the time. i cant hear anything when i jack the wheels up & rotate them - not enough speed. i have recently serviced my wheel bearings & changed the cv boots so no problems were found there. it's not a grinding noise, definately a ting ting ringly ring noise. anyone got any ideas please? Any sugestions much appreciated.
Btw ... thanks to TonyN for posting an exploded view of the diff components, i've been looking all over for that!

I dont think it is this but it wouldnt harm to grease your props front and rear. Your description makes it sount like chain links on metal is that about right? Diff oil would be next to check but it dont sound like diff to me, you need to post details of your truck mate, then we can properly help.

well, after posting here last night i checked out the similar threads at the bottom of the page which threw up the 'tinkling, ringing' as maybe being the disc pad wear indicators, so after sleeping on it i think that could be an answer ... i know my pads are getting low ... but what confuses me there is why it was only making the noise in 4wd at first & now is doing it all the time? maybe if i drive around & then apply the brakes when the noise starts i may get an answer ... though over here it is hard to find a bit of smooth tarmac where you can hear above all the other shake rattle & roll noises! I will certainly be well happy if it is as simple as that because i don't fancy getting into the diff itself.
i have done all the greasing/level checks as recent routine & as well have just changed all the bushes in the front wishbones & rubbers on the anti roll bar etc.
Thanks for being an active forum!

mine had same problem changed pads and all sorted. 4wd should not be used on the road on a 2gen!

Could be the bronze bushes too.

dammit i hate this jungle dialup ... just lost my reply & now gotta remember what i said!
Anyways i have been out & about today, in & out of 4wd a few times ... not to worry hiroler, we have a serious lack of tarmac here & anyways i was only running for a few 100m's to hear what was going on. .... i have gone off the whole pad theory as the noise is so much worse in 4wd, so maybe it is this bronze bush .. though i dont see it in the exploded diff diagram , & awww damn, i was hoping for an easy job! The trouble with turning up the stereo is that sooner or later i'm gonna end up stranded somewhere (hopefully not in the bush) & you can't even remove the drive shafts to make permanent 2wd ... maybe i should get a pair of manual free wheeling hubs? is this possible, & if so does anyone know what types are compatible, & is it a relatively straight forward job (i would think so)?

if youv'e recently done the cv boots and greased the axle shafts that stick through the hubs i doubt that the bronze bushes would be making the noise, if you grab the axle between the inner and outer cv boot and push it up and down you will get a "ting ting" type noise from a dry and worn bush, also i don't believe the bushes would rattle while under load in 4 wheel drive.

the stone guard on my transfer box was slightly touching against the box underside and made a horrendouse ratteling sound, but only sporadicaly so i couldn't get my head round or create a situation to replicate it and i was also thinking of something mechanical breaking down.

as a no money expence job i would get under the truck and have a good knock around, and a shake and a swing on everything and you may find its something simple rather than a worst case senario type thing.
