  • Expansion Chamber

    Hi all
    (newby surf owner)
I have been looking at the cooling system after all the warnings about Surfs overheating and noticed that the expansion chamber only has one pipe from the engine into it, (the outlet drains to the floor)

When the engines gets hot, coolant expands and the spring loaded valve opens to reduce pressure. this fluid goes past this valve and into the expansion chamber. can the fluid then get back into the engine when it cools ? I have looked at the spring loaded valve and it looks one way. If this is the case i guess you have to regularily check the engine coolant system by taking of the sping loaded cap and checking the fluid that way, not by looking at the expansion chamber fluid levels like I have been doing. Am I correct ?

    Thanks

no, dont keep opening the cap, coolant goes back into the engine as it cools, check the water in the expansion tank when engine is cold, preferably in the morning before you start it, only fill the bottle to the line, check it for a few days topping up if necessary then it will be ok

Have a look at your radiator cap and you will see a second small valve in the centre. This is the one that opens when engine is cooling to allow coolant to be drawn back in.Have a look here - http://www.are.com.au/index.htm
