4w/drive not working?

Hey everyone my 4 wheel drive is not working or wont engage any ideas of where to start looking? all i know at this stage is 1) the 4w/d has not been used for prob 6months and 2) on mud only the nearside rear wheel spins.I know thats a vague question! i will also be using my friend the search engine but if you can point me in the right direction,that would be great,is it all a mechanical system or could i have just blown a fuse? i have checked the one's in the engine bay beside thje battery on the offside and i found some in the drivers footwell which are all ok to.

The wheel spinning is cos u have an open diff on the back, its normal. When my 2.4 4WD wouldnt engage, it was a vacumn hose doen next to the rad, on the offside.

could it be this? on the back of the gearbox there is a unit with some wires and this vacume pipe by the looks of it,anyway cut the bit of damaged pipe off and retached so will go find a muddy field and try!

Vacuum pipes are the first port of call. Check they are all in place and a snug/tight fit. There is also an electrical inline connector that has worked loose on several occasions. A search will find the specific info.

anyone point me in the direction of where i might find any diagrams on the vacum system?it seem i might just go buy plenty of pipe and replace as much as posible as its all starting/has gone hard(the pipes that is)and electrical as well if its avalable?

Bump to the top i've now almost replaced all the vacume pipes i can find apart from two at the front underneath the truck-job for tomorrow,now im hoping it will be one of these but feelin em quick in the dark they feel ok--no jokes please lol
so where should i go from here? i have a spare set of solinoids for in the engine bay i'll try swapping them tomorrow to

4WD Vacume

Hi, I'm a newbie here, but i had the sam problem and managed to sort it out.

All i did was remove the vacuum unit (the one in your pic), (oil will pour out!!!). Then suck on the pipes and make sure the arm still moves, (u'll know what i mean when do it), it only needs the slightest bit of a suck (like a cig).
Then i just put it back on (with a bit of instant gasket), re attached the lines, tried the same thing from the start of the pipes (behind the battery, towards the cabin), and hey-presto!!!

In my case it was one of the pipes behind the battery, (at the servo), it was loose and needed sticking on to a pipe stub (located right next to the servo).

Toyota say you should stick it in 4X4 at least 10 miles a moth, to keep it all lubed up.

Thanks redrunner its all sorted now,it was one of the two solinoids in the engine bay (i just changed them both so not sure which one it was) and for safe measure all the vacume pipes are all a nice blue silicone now to.

good job for getting that fixed. It sounds like I have exactly got the same porblem. I only bought mine 2 weeks ago so Im still getting to grips where everything is. So are you able to take a pic of the replaced pipes cause I think I'll do the same.

Also before u fixed it did the 4x4 light come on on the dash. Mine was broken before I fixed it so I'm not sure whats meant to happen when the button is pressed!!

I didnt replace my pipes, but it shouldnt be to hard to get to grips with, most of the line is rubber piping, only a bit is copper, but theyre not hard to follow, you should be able to see where they start on the pic in my previouse post.

also, my 4X4 light did not work before i did this, as the light only gets a live signal when the 4X4 is engaged, the actuator acts as a swith at the same time i think, or there is a switch attached to it.

when its working tho, you shold get a green 4x4 "Idiot light" on your dash.

I know just what u mean mate.

I tried to take mine up an embankment, siding on to an industrial estate, i got stuck vertically upwards, and my tow bar stuck in the ground at the back, so i couldnt reverse either.

I had attracted a massive crowd of people, and surely enough one at a time, they came and said to me,

" uhh.... have you uhh... tried to put it in 4WD"

Hi adz if you want to just replace all the vacume pipes,they prob getting on a bit now to, then i think it would be best to start in the engine bay,from the back of the alternator-where the vacume for the system is produced and just replace each vacume pipe one at a time-removing old one, cut new one same or inch longer and replace ,that way you cant mess it up!i used 5 mtrs of vac pipe in all and had a little spare but i did do all the engine bay vac pipes to.in blue so looking good to!
