3rd gens (lift up tailgate) have a centre diff so can do AWD on highway. But (I think) the centre diff can be locked into 4WD which must again not be used on highway.Another member of the 'A' team

I actually hav A 92 LandCruiser Prado with the 2.4 Engine and I've been told it shares many characteristics with the HiluxSurf.Everything seems to be fine and I'll make sure in the future to engage 4WD only when stopped and where I really need the traction. Thanks (Hard to find info on vehicles when you own one of only a few in this part of the world...lol)

I'd think its just the electric hubs lining themselves up as the splines move as you are going along.
I'd imagine you can shift on the fly like Surfs and 4Runners, so you must be able to lock the hubs while moving or it won't work. But not sure as not seen many, need a owners maual.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...
